Crime,
punishment and rehabilitation

Senator Carona believes that effective
law enforcement is the result of
two important priorities:
-
strict enforcement of the law
along with strong punishment,
and
- meaningful
rehabilitation for those who have
been incarcerated.
"When
Texas went through its major prison
expansion in the 1990s, we expanded
our facilities but we did not expand
our rehabilitation programs,"
Senator Carona says.
"People who went into prison
are now out of prison with no skills
to successfully reintegrate into
society. In my opinion, Texas has
never sufficiently addressed this
problem."
Senator Carona's personal beliefs
on crime and rehabilitation mirror
those of District 16 voters. He
serves on the Criminal Justice Committee
and, in that capacity, has extensively
studied the issues. For his leadership,
Mr. Carona has four times been named
Legislative Crime Fighter of the
Year by the North Texas Crime Commission.
